The California Wildland Firefighter Memorial honors firefighters of all ranks and disciplines, from the early days of organized firefighting when civilians could be legally compelled into firefighting duty, to organized military, WPA labor, sit-tight or incarcerated crews to today’s professional engine, hand crews, hotshots, overhead, dozer operators, contractors and pilots. The firefighters recognized here all gave their lives enroute to, returning from or while battling wildfires in the State of California.
Each individual plaque embedded in the perimeter wall of the Memorial commemorates a wildland fire incident in California where a firefighter fatality or fatalities occurred, and the number of lives lost. As of 2015, the plaques here pay tribute to over 280 lives lost.
